New Paradigms in Presbyopic Correction sponsored content T hink about the inventions that have transformed the course of human history and there's a good chance that somewhere near the top of your list will be the Gutenberg Press. The chain reac- tion that this invention set off is remarkable: books became cheaper to manufacture, cheaper books led to more books which, in turn, led to more people reading. Reading translates to literacy, literacy leads to education and education leads to ever more creative and independent thinking. The rest, as they say, is history. An unsung hero in this explosion of human endeavor is the humble spectacle lens. An entire industry sprang up to provide eyeglasses to an ever-growing population that was voracious for the knowledge books held, but who would, were it not for eyeglasses, have had their working lives effectively cut in half by the onset of presbyopia. The technical innovations that this demand for corrective lenses spawned were fit for the world the printing press created: a binary world, a world in which all you needed to function adequately was the ability to see clearly far away or nearby - wherever you held your book. In some ways this was a static world, and the lenses we used to operate within it reflected its static nature: fixed, passive, unchanging. Graeme is an optometrist and came to Adlens fol- lowing a number of years working as a university lecturer specializing in optics and binocular vision. That world is gone. The world we live in now is an information- packed environment, where smart devices require us to look not just nearby or far away, but at every distance in between. We've moved from binary to continuous and the optical industry is realizing that this world is looking for a lens technology that is ideally suited to meet its demands: adjustable, active, dynamic. What form this technology will take and how it will ultimately emerge is a story that is playing out right now. Soon this technology will be paired with a suite of sensors that will make dynamic eyewear truly 'smart'. Keep an eye on this space. When it comes to the management of pres- byopia it's hard to see how dynamic lenses that are smart enough to intuit where you're looking and automatically adapt to the users' needs won't relegate static lenses to the annals of history.
